Camping Out

The feeling of being present with new life fills the senses. Blue sky greets the call of the returning chiffchaff as the daffodils rival the trumpets of Jericho in their unashamed glory. Time to dig out the shorts, the barbecue and the tent as the call of the wild bubbles in accord with the heartbeat of a changing season.

Totems – Painting by Keith Fitton 2013

In this waning UK capitalistic society we live in, the search for meaning has become increasingly urgent. Wherever we look, be it corrupt political system, bigoted religious belief or bankrupt economic dogma, nothing can satisfy the thirst of many for true meaning,  based on a perception of what is really real. In the madness exhibit all around us, right-wing extremism grows in the wake of a rise of nationalism itself founded on existentalist insecurity and ennui. Religious and political fanaticism flame in the atmosphere of hot air exhaled by fixed eye leaders convinced they are right.

In another world, a tribe of kinsmen sit together quietly. Their totem towers above them – giving them purpose, identity, and a deep sense of belonging. A sense of unity prevails, abiding as smoke drifts across the gathering.
